Become a Fundraiser

Because of the stark differences between Senator Obama and Senator McCain on LGBT issues, we in the LGBT and straight-ally community should not just support Senator Obama with our own money, we should do all that we can to raise money for his election as well.

The most immediate way for you to have an impact as an LGBT citizen in this election is by becoming a Pride Fundraiser and making a commitment to funding Senator Obama's campaign.

By following the steps laid out below, you can play a crucial role in winning the battle for our equality. After reading these steps and completing the short form, our volunteers at LGBT for Obama will guide you through the quick process of becoming a Pride Fundraiser and raising money in the name of the LGBT community.

Step 1. Get Organizied

Make a list of everyone you know. Consider not just known donors, but anyone you can think of -- friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers, clients, former classmates, your doctor, dentist, lawyer, hair stylist, or anyone who's supported you or the LGBT cause over the years. It doesn't matter who they are. The wider you cast your net, the better.

Step 2. Start Asking

Fundraising comes down to one simple act: Asking for contributions. People are more willing to make donations than you might think, especially if they are contributing to a worthy cause. If you are uncomfortable about asking, frame it in this context: You're not asking for donations; you're asking others to join you in an historic campaign that will literally change the political playing field for all LGBT Americans.

Asking people face-to-face or by phone is more likely to result in a donation, but you can also send letters or emails. You can find sample letters for donations here on this website. No matter how you choose to ask, be sure to make your requests as personal as you can.

Our volunteers at LGBT for Obama can also work with you to develop a fundraising webpage on my.BarackObama.com to simplify the process and allow you to track your efforts.

After asking for a contribution, always be sure to say thank you to the prospective donor for his/her support and time, even if a contribution was not made -- "no" does not always mean no forever.

Step 3. Make the Commitment

Give your own gift. Investing in this cause yourself, as generously as you can, sends a strong message to other potential supporters. When you've given yourself, you also give yourself the license to ask anyone else to do the same.

Set goals. Work your way down your list of potential supporters, and set targets for each individual. Be patient and persistent in working towards these goals.

Complete and submit the form below. To officially make the commitment and become a Pride fundraiser, simply fill out the form below and someone from LGBT for Obama will be in contact with you to help you reach your fundraising goal.

Together, we can make a difference! Thank you so much!
