The Case Against McCain

Some think Senator McCain is a moderate. He is not, especially when it comes to LGBT issues. During his tenure in the U.S. Senate he has fought and voted against basic LGBT civil rights legislation such as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would prohibit firing someone from their job simply because they are gay, and the Matthew Shepard Act, which would punish crimes based on hate more severely and vigorously. He has voted against us at almost every opportunity and never once has he taken a vote that would create a civil right currently denied to the LGBT community. Quite simply, his record and his rhetoric place Senator McCain among the most conservative legislators in Washington, D.C.

As an LGBT community, we must familiarize ourselves with John McCain’s record of intolerance so that we can share it with our family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Here is how Senator McCain’s positions break down issue by issue.

  • Against ENDA
  • Against ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
  • Against the Matthew Shepard Act Hate Crimes Act
  • Against partnership recognition of any kind
  • Against partner immigration rights
  • Against any repeal of DOMA
  • For anti-gay state constitutional amendments such as those in California, Florida and Arizona
  • Will appoint anti-LGBT judges like Justice Scalia and Alito

To help make the case for why Senator McCain is bad for the LGBT community, the Human Rights Campaign compiled this compelling YouTube video:

Let no one be fooled. McCain is no moderate on issues of concern to the LGBT community. Eight years ago America was taken in by a different Republican masquerading as a compassionate conservative, and we ended up with the most anti-gay president in the nation’s history. We cannot let this happen again.
